Caught TRIBES with the usual bunch and
really enjoyed myself. Wasn’t exactly too sure what to expect of the
storyline, but I surely had some good takeaway from it.
1) Finding a community. Honeymoon, doubting, withdrawal phase.
Personally,
I feel that no matter who or what you are, at some point of your life, you'll find yourself finding/found some sort of community where you think you belong, or you want to belong. I thought about it and wondered if I really did belong there? Are we trying to fit in a community only because that's where we feel like we belong, because we found something we could actually be good at, because we found some place where we could actually be heard? Or are you just there solely just to be "there"? I have found a sense of belonging in certain places, communities, friendships in my lifetime but then the more time passes, the less fitting I felt. And then time introduces me to new ones. It’s so odd, but I really hope none of it leaves me completely.
2) Mad respect and props for the actors and actresses. I have always loved watching plays, musicals, etc. All the ones I’ve been to have been great, and this was no exception. Having sat at the front row, I could see every bit of expression, movement and whatnot. And I felt that everything was so well executed. Especially the scene where Billy refused to converse by talking but only through signing, and Sylvia being in the position where she had to translate everything for the family and stuff. The emotions in the actions and signings were really felt and seemed so real. It’s amazing how people can be so skilled and talented to portray feelings/emotions that they may or may not have had. Super awesome. :)
3) The fact that the play included the story of how different it could be for one who was born deaf and one who is going deaf. It gave me a sense of empathy (and almost hurt) to watching the transition of one becoming deaf.
And also how they included the family dynamics of the hearing and the
deaf. It was really interesting to see and really gave me a warm feeling
inside that it has actually been thought of.
4) I really, really think this is worth mentioning. I loved the set, it was so nicely set up (lol), like everything was so real. The lighting, sounds, the part where the right side of the set moved. My gosh mad props to those who designed/created it!! I think it was also super well thought of, how they used the walls/tablecloth/etc to project the subtitles and whatnot. Just wowwweeee.
5) All in all, it was a
really enriching yet heartwarming play which was executed really, really
well. I loved every bit of it (coming from one who don’t know much
about drama or plays though). Moreover, we got the privilege to meet the
cast and there were such lovely, lovely, lovely people. Genuinely hope to be able to support and watch them in future productions too.
