Just my two cents.

Firstly,

Don't ever assume what other people go through.

E.g. You must have it easier cause you're not in XXX.

E.g. Oh you're in that cause so you only XXX and XXX?

Try to be the slightest bit understanding and at least ask them instead.
E.g. What is it like?
E.g. What do you do?

Secondly,

Try to be the slightest bit understanding and explain what you actually do or go through.

Simply because they have never gone through it before.

E.g. Actually, we do more than just that. We XXX, XXX, XXX...

Or, if you don't have the energy to entertain such comments..

E.g. I think we all have our own hardships and ease no matter what XXX we're in.

And change the subject.
